I wanna save the world. Right after I finish this hair bow.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like I’ve just lost the meaning of what I’m doing in the craft world. Making another hair clip just doesn’t seem to be an occupation that’s going to change the world in any way. Things start to feel shallow and pointless.

So I do other things instead. I try to volunteer with local animal shelters, and recently did graphic design work for a non-profit mental health facility. I’m about to do more design work for a non-profit orphanage in Burma.

What are some ways you feel good about your business/shop, and what you’re doing in the community/world? Do you balance it with other philanthropy efforts, or combine the two? I would love to figure out some consistent ways of combining philanthropy and Saucy Bird together. :)

(I had hoped to donate a portion of my sales to local animal shelters, but I haven’t made enough sales yet to make that a reality!)

Cozy Picks for Sick Chicks

I have my second cold this month. Boo! I’m hoping that once this goes away I’ll be done for the year! In the meantime, I’m sipping tea and popping throat drops all day, and wrapping up in cozy blankies and pjs in the evening. Here are some picks from Etsy that appeal to my current must-have-comfort-now mantra.

This “Ruff” Sleepy Headz pillow by lightning bugz looks like the perfect napping companion, no matter what age you are:

“Walking In Blanket” is the name of these slippers by netamir. Really, who can resist that? They look both stylish and cozy – no cold floors on the feet, and no frumpy house wear:

I don’t know who Joe and Donald are, but something about the thought of drinking my peppermint tea out of their mugs makes me happy. Vintage mugs at Red Eye Vintage:

And I think this baby might have to make its way home to me. I have a Count Von Count stainless travel mug already, but this Saucy blue ceramic travel mug by A Piece by Denise is sooo pretty. Plus it’s dishwasher and microwave safe!

Joining the blogosphere!

Welcome to the Saucy Bird blog!

I decided it was high time to toss my feather into the blogging ring.  So here I am! This blog will cover news about the Saucy Bird shop on Etsy, like my rockabilly/ Alice in Wonderland inspired hair flower:

Plus I’ll post about cute finds that I discover in other places, typically of the retro variety, as well as geekery because well, I’m a geek. What exactly is a “find”, you ask? That can be anything from old furniture, to new diy, to vintage clothing and housewares, art, design, classic cars, and everything in between! I have lots of connections around the web, and I want to help show off the stuff I love, particularly that made by independent crafters/designers. Like this dashing scarlet topper, from Hey Sailor! on Etsy:

Since I’m a geek, you know there’s gonna be some of that sprinkled in here too. “Geekery” for Saucy purposes refers to various technology and diy inspired gadgetry. Think awesome handmade carrying cases for your mp3 player, or maybe sweet new websites/programs to help you stay connected to the creative community.  Or maybe just somethin a little like this adorable felt flash drive keychain. Stop it, how cute is this?? I can’t stand it. This is not a real flash drive, but he hopes to be one some day when he grows up:
